Dating your les paul
Shallower neck pitch means an early second-generation Gibson Les Paul. The Gibson Les Paul is the most forged guitar on the market.
If the serial number doesn't match up with the physical evidence and you're looking to buy, ask for some provenance before you pull the trigger. Kit Kiefer has written or contributed to more than a dozen pop-culture books, including the Marvel Encyclopedia, The New Music Guide and They Called It Rock: The Goldmine Oral History of Rock 'n' Roll.
If your Gibson Les Paul has an eight-digit serial number stamped on the back of the headstock, you're in luck. Eight-digit Les Paul serial numbers follow a "YDDDYPPP" scheme where "YY" is the production year, "DDD" is the day of the year, and "PPP" is the instrument rank and/or plant designation.
This isn't universal--some Custom Shop models have six-digit numbers -- but it should allow you to date almost all post-1975 Les Pauls.
;) This page is for dating Ibanez guitars built in Japan only.
There is no master list to correlate to a model number, these are consecutive serialized numbers only.
If you're trying to figure out what model something is from the serial number, figure out what year it is then go to the catalog library for the corresponding year [or year before or after] to find the model.
Numbers beginning in 99 are from 1975, numbers beginning in 00 are from 1976, and numbers beginning in 06 are from 1977.
Check the back for a stamped-in eight-digit serial number.
